When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race. - H. G. Wells (1866 - 1946)

Kew Boulevard on Saturday

Rode down to Kew and did a lap of the Boulevard

8Km from home to the start (mostly downhill) along Belmore road - Harp Road - etc
12Km on the Boulevard
14Km home visa bike path along the freeway because I felt like I had done enough hills.

It struck me that  the people riding the bikepath were a lot friendlier with a lot more "Hello"s  "G'day"s and waves than from the much more serious roadies that were out training (rather than riding) on the Boulevard.

Having said that -  The option of getting about 36 Km done and being home by 8:30 was good
(compared to the usual start time of 7:30 that my friends have established for a beach road ride) and also being able to start/finish at home saves 30-40 minutes of driving.   Family always feels neglected when I head of for 3-4 hours first thing on the weekend.

Added Bonus -  I noticed the Farmers Market at Collingwood Children's farm being set-up as I rode past looking over Collingwood from the Kew Boulevard and so I got home and had a quick shower and headed back in by car with my daughter (H)  for a breakfast (second for me!) of rather delicious buffalo sausages. Also spent an hour wandering around the farm - H got to milk Patsy (the cow) and saw some week old piglets.

So Good all around - I might try to make that ride regularly..

2009:  Weekends with 25Km+ rides (2) .  Weekends without (0)

Down to Mordialloc and return

Rode down to Mordi on Saturday morning.   about 52Km  - about 27 Km an hour thanks to a tailwind on the return and a good group to sit behind most of the way down.

Its a good training ride about 2 hours and doesn't leave me so exhausted that I'm useless around the house for the remainder of Saturday.   Started at 7:30  - although sunrise is closer to 6:00 am so I think during summer though I should be staring a bit earlier.

Beautiful weather for the ride - great to be alive on days like this.

Blog died....

My Blogs have a habit of dying....interest fades....life gets busy...

Around the bay 2008  -  I signed up for 210 Km (M-S-M)

Which was good because by the time I got to Rye I was feeling very stuffed....stopped to get some food and then turned around and rode home

Good (?) news is that I did all the hills in both directions ......and had a Fun day.
Bad news is that I only did 175 Km.

Bit more training would be good ...but continuing to be hard to find the time.

Put the bike up on a trainer in the Gararge -  I'm going to make sure I get on briefly every other day - even 10 minutes or so is a good thing to start  -  and try to ride to work once a week during the coming year - it means being a bit more organised with logistics but now that I'm driving in most days I can carry in a change of  clothing a little more easily.

Cheers....and Happy New Year.

Tapering ...or just not training enough?

Tapering

in the context of sports, refers to the practice of reducing, or tapering off, exercise in the days just before an important competition. ...

50K down just part Mordi on Saturday - my comment to friends that I'm tapering my training with a sly grin so they know I'm full of BS ( They knew that anyway!)

Have I done enough to be able to do the 210 next weekend?   In someways the preasure to do the longer distances isn't really helping me ENJOY my riding which was frankly one of the points of this effort.

I think Ill do what I can come Sunday and after that Ill just go back to doing and enjoying shorter 50K type rides just for fun.

Training in September

I did actually do some training in September
Well one ride down to Mt Eliza and back - about 90 km all up but did include going up Oliver's Hill which at least I have now done once.

2 weekends left to around the bay -  I'm sure if I take my time Ill make it!

Mrs keeps telling me to enjoy my 50K rides and not get into these 210K rides but I want to do that distance at least once.

Something else to look out for

Drunk bashes female bike rider in East Hawthorn

Article from: Herald Sun

A FEMALE cyclist believes a helmet saved her from serious head injuries when she was attacked by a drunken pedestrian in East Hawthorn.
Annalise Gehling, 27, was riding home in Riversdale Rd on Saturday night after a meal in the city with friends.
Just over a kilometre from her Camberwell home she was hurled from her bike by a man who rushed across the road to get at her, then kicked her in the head several times while she was lying helpless on the ground.

Not good ....Not good at all - especially when I have ridden along that same bit of road myself.

So many excuses so little time (cont)

Its cold  (still)
Its wet  (still)
I have a cough  (yes still)
I have things to do  (probably will always)
I have changed my tyres for the new ones that finally arrived

Its cold and wet and I have a cough ...roll over and go back to sleep.  Head out and do 60 km and get home feeling like rubbish.  Sorry to my friend that I forced to ride through a pile of glass because I wasn't alert enough. (while I avoided it)

Only 55  days till 210K around the bay.
